“How do you get your hair like that? What’s your hair type?” These are all questions I tend to get on a daily basis and their answers are waiting for you. After asking about my hair, people often continue by putting down their hair. I always get responses such as, “My hair could never be like that, it’s too hard to work with.” In reality, they’re making the situation bigger than it has to actually be. It’s not hard to have “nice hair”, it just takes effort. Of course, your hair is going to be difficult to handle if you aren't willing to work with it. Like everything else in life, not comes easy. Some of us need to take time to trust search for products and styles at work with our beautiful kinks. I realize that looking online can be a little discouraging when trying to follow every step. That is exactly why I’m here to ease the pressure and give you a little insight on how I get my hair the way I do.

*I will leave linking and pictures of every product*

To start off, I wash my hair either every other week or so unless otherwise. If I recognize I’m getting a lot of build up or my head itches way too much then it’s most definitely time to wash. When I even up skipping my hair I never pre-poo (oiling your hair before washing to minimize dryness). I have given it time to shine, but I don’t find it does anything for me. Regardless of my experience, I recommend everyone try it at least once. As soon as I get in the shower, I wet my hair and part it right down the middle. When I separate my hair like this, I can focus solely on either side while still working in big sections to save time. After splitting my hair in half, I wash my hair with The Mane Choice Detangling Hydration Shampoo. The Mane Choice is my go-to product, but when I run out I use Cantu’s Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo. I find that either shampoo does my hair justice, but whichever you choose is up to you. Working with one side at a time, I focus on applying the shampoo to my roots and let the excess run over the rest of my hair. Washing this way helps to decrease dryness and assures you get the dirtiest part. Another habit I’ve formed is washing my hair with my nails rather than my fingertips. I know I can't be the other one that still has a dirty scalp from working in the shampoo with only their fingertips. After making sure my scalp is clean which could take up to two washes, I make sure to complete rinse my hair. I then follow up by skipping conditioning and going right into deep conditioning. To deep condition, I use the Green Tea & Carrot Deep Strengthening & Restorative Mask Treatment by The Mane Choice and mix it with pure honey. Once again, I apply this mixture one side at a time as well then lock in the heat with a regular shopping plastic bag. To help pass by the time, I go ahead and finish my shower by washing myself. Whenever I'm done showering, I assume I'm also done deep conditioning as well. Instead of rinsing everything out, I only rinse my hair a little more than halfway. I try to avoid washing everything completely out to keep my moisture (don’t worry, your hair won’t be sticky). After rinsing I dry my hair with an old cotton t-shirt, to help minimize breakage. Did you notice I don’t actually detangle in the shower? Sure, I do some finger detangling here and there, but I think detangling in the shower is a waste of time for now. Whenever I truly detangled my hair in the past, it'd always get tangled again while drying. For you on the other hand, if you don't think that's up your alley then, by all means, detangle as you please.

Now that the washing is over, this is where the magic happens. When my

hair is finally damp enough to where

it’s not dripping, I start working with my hair. My go-to style is a twist out simply because they last a while and they're faster than braid outs. Rather than sectioning off my hair ahead of time, I do it as I do. If I want more defined curls, then I'll stick to smaller sections. If I'm in the mood for bigger hair, I'll do bigger sections. Starting at the back of my head, I spritz my hair with water if it's drying up before I do anything. Once my hair is damp again, I apply my leave in conditioner. I use 3-in-1 Revitalize & Refresh Conditioner by The Mane Choice. Hint the “3-in-1”, this product can serve as a leave in, co-wash, or a detangler. When that's distributed evenly, apply Jamaican black castor oil, and a curling cream. For my curling cream, I gravitate to my holy grail, Jane Carter Solution Incredible Curls. As soon as you apply it, your kinks melt into manageable moisturized little curls. After everything gets applied, I brush through with my Denman brush. You could detangle your hair another way, but my Denman brush clumps my curls together well. If I compare my twist outs using a Denman brush and finger detangling, the Denman brush wins hands down. After brushing your hair, start twisting. When this process all over your head, wait for your hair to DRY COMPLETELY. If you’re feeling spontaneous and have a little extra time on your hands try doing Bantu knots.

Congrats, you’re finally in the final stretch! It’s officially time to take out your twist. This part is the easiest, yet the most crucial. Before thinking about touching your hair APPLY OIL TO YOUR FINGERTIPS and make sure your hair is dry. Not to sound to super dramatic or anything, but doing this step can make or break everything. After applying the oil GENTLY separate each individual twist. Once every curl is separated apply more oil if needed, go back in and separate each group of hair at least twice. The less you separate, the more definition you’ll have and the more you separate, the more volume you’ll have. When you’re satisfied with your look, style to your hair to your liking, then go in with a pick to estimate any gaps. After all the steps followed, you should end up with an amazing twist out.
